Teaching Studio Update

Changes are happening in the teaching studio as I am getting closer to the first class beginning. Above you see the general room so far.  Floor is painted, and walls and ceilings are being patched, too. It is interesting how the room seems to grow or shrink in size with each change.

The teaching studio is part of a newer addition to the home. A unique feature is the original window in the former exterior wall of the old house. The first image is of looking into the window from the stairway and the second is looking from the studio out into the stair and hallways.

I need to patch the ceiling.

I removed a closet wall and underneath one of the studs was the original siding from the house. I am leaving this strip to show the old siding, which is near the original window shown above.

This is the present stairway.

This is the current hallway floor.  The floor, when I bought the house, was covered with masonite and linoleum tile.  I will be fixing this up and painting it to match the studio floor, along with fixing trim, etc. I'm looking forward to the first students who will use this space starting January 7

10 Minutes 'Til Sleep: Red Onion

Red onion?!  Why am I drawing a red onion from my bed.  Well, it was sitting on my nightstand.  I was looking at it for another project and somehow I left it on my nightstand.  I can be forgetful and I misplace things often. There was a red onion on my nightstand - so I drew it.

Painting Featured in Northern Gardener Magazine

Right there on the bottom of page 8 of the November/December issue of the Northern Gardener magazine is my painting of a wild columbine. I'm very excited to have one of my paintings employed again in the annual fundraising campaign of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society, publisher of the Northern Gardener magazine.  Support MSHS and you could receive a fine art print of this wild columbine painting.  FYI - the painting is also featured on page 6.

MSHS is a great non-profit organization that promotes gardening and helps gardeners in Minnesota.  The magazine is the only gardening magazine that focuses on cold weather climates like that in the upper-Midwest.

The original painting will be auctioned off at the MSHS Spring at the Inn event at the end of March.

Illustration: Khaki Shorts and Polo Shirt

These are the most comfortable clothes that I wear.  Well, not in the wintertime.  But in the summertime, these are the most comfortable. I only have one pair of these shorts and one of these shirts but feel like I should just buy seven of each and wear nothing else. Well, of course, underwear. It is important to feel comfortable on a warm beautiful summer's day.

Drawing: Beets

Ink drawing of beets I drew last weekend at the farm.  We pulled them out of the garden, washed them and then I was going to draw them, but I fell asleep.  Next morning, Saturday, I pulled them out of the fridge and arranged them on a plate.  I hope to make an oil painting of this subject someday soon.

Watercolor: Aquilegia canadensis

I have had the great honor again this year to create a botanical image for the Minnesota State Horticultural Society (MSHS) for its annual fundraiser. This year a native columbine was chosen.

This is the final painting of which prints will be made for those who participate in MSHS' annual appeal. I worked from photos of a columbine growing in a board members yard and from real columbines found on Mallard Island.  I painted the image while on Mallard Island for two weeks this summer. Fortunately, this summer was very late and some of these early summer flowers were still blooming on the Canadian border in late July - early August.

I love columbines and have tried painting them before, although I have not been happy with the results.  Columbine are a very lacy plant with a lot of interesting information spread over many stems.  I found the branching pattern very interesting with branches dividing into threes, with the middle branch blooming and ending at the bloom, while the two side branches would divide again and continue to create more blooms above the middle branch. There also are different shapes to the leaves when they are at different ages.  Young leaves  seem almost pointy while, the older the leaf gets, the more lobed it grows.

The blooms are also interesting because, unlike many flowers, the blooms are complete at a small size.  This means that you can see all the parts of the bloom even in its smallest bud.  Many other flowers unfold to reveal the parts of the bloom. The columbine is a very fascinating plant from its structure to its coloring.  It was fun to explore this plant and I thank the Minnesota State Horticultural Society for the opportunity. The image will appear in their November-December issue of the Northern Gardener Magazine, which will be in the mailbox and on stands soon.

10 Minutes 'TIl Sleep: Sock Dog

This is a drawing of a dog my daughter sewed for me from one of her socks.  She did this for several family members one Christmas.  I sleep with it in our around my bed and take it with me when I travel.  It does not have a name.

10 Minutes 'til Sleep: Glasses

I have been drawing quick 10 minute ink drawings just before going to bed - from my bed.  I might call the series 10 Minutes 'Til Sleep.  Whatever I call it, here is a drawing of my reading glasses that sit on my bedside stand.
